Concrete

Since there is such a wide variety of concrete applications, it can be difficult to find a contractor that can handle all aspects of the product and its uses.

The first critical item is demolition and site preparation.  Concrete removal, especially if there is reinforcing such as rebar or steel mesh involved, is very labor and disposal intensive.  It requires specialized tools and exhaustive manual labor to cut, or fracture and break up the concrete in order to dispose of the debris. In a basement remodel, it may be necessary to cut and jackhammer the concrete to improve the drainage of the space, or in the case of a driveway or slab, to fracture the concrete and cut the reinforcing medium in order to move and dispose of the waste.  When working with slab replacement, the base strata needs to be prepped with gravel and compacted in order to prevent future cracking of the new concrete installation.  This subsurface prep is also very important if pavers/preformed paving bricks are used for driveways and paths.

Due to the permanency of concrete, which has an estimated lifespan of 150 years, more or less (Source: Xactimate software), it is critical to make sure all aspects and trades involved in the project are performed and coordinated in a flawless manner. In this phase of construction the planning and coordination of the form carpenters to lay out and build concrete forms (molding framework) is extremely important, since these are skills that deviate from the actual concrete setting, pouring, and finishing, and will ultimately determine the shape and dimensions of the finished, permanent product.

Concrete Finishing

The finished texture of the concrete is determined based on a number of factors.  In the case of basement drainage and slab prep,  the substrate cuts should be plumb and straight, and all settling cracks should be cleaned and filled to ensure that no random leaking can occur after the flooring or walls have been finished.  When it comes to driveways, sidewalks, steps, and patios/pools, there are different textures that are necessary to prevent slipping from pedestrian traffic.  There are also concrete texture techniques,  embossing/epoxy, or stains that are available to achieve a pleasing appearance and functionality.

Concrete work is a dirty business, and if concrete residue is splashed, missed, or improperly disposed of, once dry, can be very difficult to remove.  You can always count on our crews for an impeccable cleanup.
